We could not be more excited to host Antje Duvekot and Natalia Zukerman together in one night. Antje Duvekot has been called “the next great American folk singer-songwriter.” Born in Germany, Antje came to the U.S. as a teen. Duvekot’s songs feel at once fresh-faced and firmly rooted, driven by the whispery sensuality of her voice. (AntjeDuvekot.com / MySpace) Natalia Zukerman has a sound that’s strong yet delicate, gentle yet insistent. You can call her songs folk music if you like, but there’s jazz there too, and some sultry blues. The Boston Globe writes: “Zukerman’s guitar is a strutting brass band one minute, a sighing lover the next.” (NataliaZukerman.com / MySpace) Join us for a great night a music with two of today’s finest rising songwriters!

Music will begin at 8pm. The suggested donation for this show is $15.

We will also be treated to an opening set by local Minneapolis rising star Eliza Blue. Reveille Magazine says of her new release, Screen Doors and Back Doors, “Honest and heartfelt, Blue’s album is a lovely offering from one of the Cities’ most promising up-and-coming folk singers.” (MySpace)

January 23, 2009

8:00 pm

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Peter Mulvey to the Little Apple House Concerts living room on Friday, January 23rd at 8:00 PM! We will also be joined by special guest Brianna Lane for this show. Please join us for our first show of 2009 and our first show at our new location in southwest Minneapolis.

Peter Mulvey began as a self-described “city kid” from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He played, wrote, and sang in bands while studying theatre at Marquette University. After graduating, he traveled to Ireland, where he learned the trade of busker on the streets of Dublin. Returning to the U.S. a few years later, he settled in Boston, building an audience through street and subway performing, while also immersing himself in the thriving musical community. Following his Signature Sounds label debut The Trouble with Poets in 2000, Peter released three more solo albums - Ten Thousand Mornings (2001), Kitchen Radio (2004) and The Knuckleball Suite (2006) - in addition to the 2003 collaborative Redbird album with Kris Delmhorst and Jeffrey Foucault. About him, The Irish Times wrote: “Peter Mulvey is consistently the most original and dynamic of the US singer-songwriters to tour these shores… A phenomenal performer with huge energy, a quick fire, quirky take on life, and an extraordinary guitar style… a joy to see.”

Mulvey’s latest album, Notes from Elsewhere, is a retrospective collection of the very best songs Mulvey has written and performed over his 15 year recording career. Recorded solo in a studio, these are fresh takes on songs that have become fan and critic favorites over the years. While Mulvey’s previous band-backed albums showcased the songs, these solo versions allow each song to shine on its own demonstrating Peter’s strengths as a songwriter. (PeterMulvey.com / MySpace)

Peter Mulvey & Brianna Lane on the No Gasoline Tour 2008

In addition to the critical acclaim that his recorded works have brought him, though, Peter Mulvey is also highly regarded (and respected by his fellow musicians) as a serious disciple of the road. Touring rigorously, year in and year out, has made him who and what he is. Traveling from Ireland to Anchorage and all points in between, whether playing solo, duo, or with a full-on rock back, live performance is what defines his work and is where he shines. Most recently, his touring career took an interesting turn, when Mulvey decided to embark on the “Look Ma, No Gasoline Tour” - a ten day, 300 mile concert tour of southern Wisconsin, to which he rode entirely on his bicycle.

Minneapolis’ own Brianna Lane joined Peter for four dates of that tour, riding her own bicycle over 250 miles from show to show. We can’t wait to have them both here to reprise a bit of their tour together (although they won’t be arriving by bike to this one!). Edie was the first artist to perform at Little Apple House Concerts and we couldn’t be happier to have her back on April 3rd, 2009 at 8:00PM!

Boston-based singer-songwriter Edie Carey is known for her unmistakable honeyed voice, her intelligent, heart-grabbing songs, but perhaps most especially for her warm, engaging presence on - and off - stage. As much a part of her show as the music itself, Edie’s wry and often self-mocking humor makes audiences feel as though they have just spent an evening with a very close friend. (EdieCarey.com / MySpace)

Newly-formed americana band Harbor Collective, led by Brianna Lane and Cahalen David Morrison will be opening the show, performing a mash of tunes; originals, covers, and traditionals, mostly from the old-time, blues, and country traditions. These two nearly-veteran songwriters will not disappoint. (MySpace)

The suggested donation for this show is $15. The music will start at 8:00.

November 20, 2008

7:30 pm

We are ridiculously excited to be hosting the brilliant and beautiful ladies Anaïs Mitchell and Rachel Ries on Thursday, November 20th.

Singer/songwriters Anaïs Mitchell and Rachel Ries met at a Texas campfire in 2004. Both artists had releases on the same small label—Chicago’s Waterbug Records—before Mitchell joined Ani Difranco’s Righteous Babe Records and Ries founded her own SoDak Records in 2007. The two friends began doing occasional tours together, for camaraderie and to share touring expenses. “People kept saying, ‘you girls should make a recording,’” says Mitchell. “So finally we did!” The result is the simply titled country e.p. The relaxed, vintage production features musicians from the artists’ respective Boston and Chicago communities and the vocal harmonies they worked out for their tours. We are thrilled that Anaïs & Rachel are stopping by Little Apple House Concerts as part of their tour in support of this new record.

Anaïs Mitchell is, according to one reviewer, “a bundle of contradictions. She has the earthiness of Shawn Colvin, the child like bite of Joanna Newsom, and the urban jumpiness of Ani DiFranco.” From her birthplace on a Vermont sheep farm to Beirut cafés, Cairo apartments and Austin recording studios, Anaïs Mitchell has been around. After debuting in 2002 with (now out-of-print) The Song They Sang When Rome Fell, Anaïs became known and loved in the folk community. Her first big break came in 2003, when the Kerrville Folk Festival honored her with its New Folk Award. Soon thereafter Anaïs released her second album, Hymns For The Exiled, on Chicago-based Waterbug Records in 2004. The stirring collection of guitar and voice cemented Mitchell’s status as a folksinger to watch, and the record eventually reached the ears of Ani DiFranco. After seeing a few of Anaïs’ captivating concerts, DiFranco signed the artist to her label, Righteous Babe Records. The Brightness, Anaïs’ Righteous Babe debut released in 2007, spills over with worldly metaphors, intense emotions and unshakeable reverence to the art of song. (AnaisMitchell.com / MySpace)

Daughter of Mennonite missionaries, raised in Zaire and Freeman, SD, Chicagoan Rachel Ries has been steadily and somewhat quietly building a reputation as one of the country’s finest Americana singer-songwriters. Classically trained in voice, piano, violin and viola, she marries sophisticated, vintage musicality to smart lyrics. Like Andrew Bird and Erin McKeown, Rachel has developed an urban cult following based on a fresh approach to musical forms of the ‘20s and ‘30s. Her songs range from the romantic simplicity of jazz standards to the distilled intensity of poet Anne Sexton. Ries has an adventurous ear for melody and a voice flexible enough to accomplish it. Without a Bird, Rachel’s second full-length album, released on her own SoDak Records in 2007, is a warm and carefully orchestral record, featuring some of Chicago’s finest musicians. Rachel’s first album, For You Only, was released on Waterbug Records in the summer of 2005. “The most seductively literary folk debut since Dar Williams,” writes Tom Neff, Grassy Hill Radio. (MySpace)

The suggested donation for this show is $15 per person. Music will begin at 7:30pm.

Unfortunately, the show that we were trying to host in September has had to be postponed until later in the year… so as of right now, I’m not sure who or when our next show will be! But, we are working on a few different things, so I’m sure something wonderful will present itself soon enough.

Stay tuned, and continue to enjoy your summers!

Rose Polenzani and Rose Cousins.

Individually, these two women are both among the smartest, most talented singer-songwriters you can find playing today. Put them together and it’s something to behold! It is a rare treat to catch either of these two touring in Minnesota, so we couldn’t be more excited to be hosting them together, in our home!

About Rose and Rose, WERS.org wrote: “Rose Polenzani and Rose Cousins have the same first name and sing in the same genre of music. One would think that they would immediately reflect each other in the music department, but that is only true when they sing together. Each woman has a distinctly different style, sound, and voice, and when combined, their harmony is contagious.”

Rose Polenzani made her debut at the 1998 Newport and Lilith Fair Festivals, and has been writing and touring ever since. She has released five albums to date, including two on Amy Ray’s Daemon Records and one as a member of Voices on the Verge, alongside Jess Klein, Erin McKeown, and Beth Amsel. Her latest triumphant effort, When the River Meets the Sea (releasing May 14th), was recorded with Boston sensation Session Americana. Originally from Chicago, Rose currently lives and plays in Massachusetts as the folk darling of the Cambridge music scene.
Since releasing her first two EPs in 2002 and 2003, Rose Cousins has carved a place for herself in the songwriting community across the US and Canada, where she resides in her adopted home base of Halifax, NS. Drawing on influences from the traditions of folk, bluegrass, pop and Appalachian music, Rose’s intimate vocals and warm guitar convey a passionate honesty that leaves you feeling like each of her songs could somehow belong to you. With her distinctive stage performance, audiences can find themselves in tears one moment and fits of laughter the next.

Listen to full-length tracks on EdieCarey.com or MySpace.

In addition to Edie, we will be treated to a double-opener extravaganza from two lovely ladies:

Local sweetheart Brianna Lane, who according to Jim Walsh (City Pages, Minneapolis, MN) is “…a star in the making. She’s poised, ambitious, a great writer, a soul singer of the first order, and a lithe, accomplished guitarist.” (BriannaLaneMusic.com / MySpace)

Multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Elana Arian, who seamlessly blends the discipline of classical, the freedom of jazz, and the candor of folk music into her own unique style as a singer/songwriter. (ElanaArian.com / MySpace)

We hope you’ll join us for what is sure to be a memorable night. The suggested donation for this show is $12 per person.
